Shannen Doherty Biography

Shannen Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, on April 12, 1971, to parents Tom and Rosa. Her father worked in a bank while her mother owned a beauty parlor. She has an older brother named Sean. In 1978 at the tender age of seven, she and her family moved to Los Angeles, where her father started a West Coast branch of the family transportation business. Shannen has always been close to her family, who disciplined her from a young age. She knew she wanted to pursue an acting career when she made her acting debut at age ten, with a role on the series _"Father Murphy" (1981)_ (qv). Shannen was a confident student, involving herself in school performances and working hard in school, by making sure she always had exceptional grades. Despite her confidence, she isolated herself from large crowds and preferred to have a few close friends. She made a name for herself as a child actress at just 11-years-old, starring in _"Little House on the Prairie" (1974)_ (qv) as Jenny Wilder. It was 'Michael Landon (I)' (qv) who noticed her performance in an episode of _"Father Murphy" (1981)_ (qv), that he decided to cast her. She then went on to appear in _"Our House" (1986)_ (qv) with 'Deidre Hall' (qv) and 'Wilford Brimley' (qv). She also starred alongside 'Sarah Jessica Parker' (qv) and 'Helen Hunt (I)' (qv) in _Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985)_ (qv) and then in _Heathers (1988)_ (qv), a teen comedy also starring 'Winona Ryder' (qv). Her real success came in 1990, at the age of 19, when she was cast in 'Aaron Spelling' (qv)'s long-running hit series, _"Beverly Hills, 90210" (1990)_ (qv) as Brenda Walsh, the twin sister of Brandon Walsh, played by 'Jason Priestley' (qv). She attracted media attention from the press and eventually made her a household name. The success of the popular teen drama appealed to young teenage girls who could relate to her character, Brenda Walsh. After four years, she left the show in 1994. Afterward, she continued her work in movies, starring in the thriller _Almost Dead (1994)_ (qv) and the comedy _Mallrats (1995)_ (qv). During the fall of 1998, she reunited with long-time producer 'Aaron Spelling' (qv), when she was cast as Prue Halliwell on _"Charmed" (1998)_ (qv), a show about three ordinary women who happen to be witches. She starred alongside 'Alyssa Milano' (qv) and 'Holly Marie Combs' (qv). After three years, she left the show to find work in movies. Before her departure from the show, she had directed three of the last episodes in which she starred. She continued her work in movies by starring in _Another Day (2001) (TV)_ (qv), _The Rendering (2002)_ (qv), _Hell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay (2002) (TV)_ (qv), and _Nightlight (2003) (TV)_ (qv). In 2003, she hosted season one of _"Scare Tactics" (2003)_ (qv) as well as season two with only 8 episodes, and then left to pursue other endeavors. In the fall of 2004, Shannen made her return to television on Fox's drama series _"North Shore" (2004)_ (qv), where she played Alexandra Hudson, the long-lost sister of Nicole Booth, played by 'Brooke Burns' (qv). Eventually the show was canceled after one season. Then in 2005, she landed the role of Denise Johnson on the UPN series _"Love, Inc." (2005)_ (qv), however after the pilot episode she was dropped from the sitcom. From there she has ventured into new projects and in 2006, she starred in her own reality series, _"Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty" (2006)_ (qv).

Shannen Doherty Personal Quotes

  • [in Cleo magazine, August 2000] Let me start by saying it wasn't like I walked out one day and said, "I quit". It was a very long process of quitting the show. Aaron [producer 'Aaron Spelling' (qv)] got as fed up with me as I was with the show, and I think it was because the notoriety was too much. People were hating the character and I couldn't take the abuse that came with that. People couldn't separate me from her and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful.
  • [on the tabloid articles] You know, as far as I'm concerned, whatever they write, um, is so . . . it's consisted of so many different lies that it's not even worth justifying it.
  • Even when I'm called in for an audition or anything, and even when I have to meet other actors / actresses, or be in front of the camera, I get goosebumps.
  • [in February 2005] I've been very, very, very happily single since October--I ended my previous relationship, and it thrills me to no end. I'm just sort of hanging out and being a single girl and enjoying the moment. I think to just be a girl and have fun is so incredibly important.
