Goldie Hawn Biography

Goldie Jean Hawn was born November 21, 1945 in Washington D.C. to Laura Steinhoff (a jewelry shop/dance school owner) and Edward Rutledge Hawn (a band musician). She has a sister, Patricia, and a brother, Edward, who died before she was born. She was raised in the Jewish religion. Her mother was Jewish and the daughter of Hungarian immigrants. Her father was Presbyterian. At the age of three Goldie began taking ballet and tap dance lessons, and at the age of ten she danced in the chorus of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo production of "The Nutcracker". At the age of 19 she ran and instructed a ballet school, having dropped out of college where she was majoring in drama. Before going into the film business she worked as a professional dancer. She had her feature film debut in _The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968)_ (qv), with a small role as a giggling dancer. Her first supporting role came in 1969, where she played opposite 'Walter Matthau' (qv) and 'Ingrid Bergman (I)' (qv) in _Cactus Flower (1969)_ (qv), a role which earned her an academy award for best supporting actress. After her academy award win her career took off and she followed with roles in successful comedies such as _There's a Girl in My Soup (1970)_ (qv) and _Shampoo (1975)_ (qv) and more dramatic roles in _The Girl from Petrovka (1974)_ (qv) and _The Sugarland Express (1974)_ (qv). In 1978, she starred alongside 'Chevy Chase' (qv) in the box office hit _Foul Play (1978)_ (qv). In 1980 she starred in another box office hit, _Private Benjamin (1980)_ (qv), where she also served as producer. During the 1980s she starred in hit movies such as _Protocol (1984)_ (qv), _Wildcats (1986)_ (qv) and _Swing Shift (1984)_ (qv). In 1987 she appeared with her partner 'Kurt Russell (I)' (qv) in the film _Overboard (1987)_ (qv), which became both a critical and box office disappointment. Her career slowed down after that until 1990 when she starred alongside 'Mel Gibson (I)' (qv) in _Bird on a Wire (1990)_ (qv). In 1992 she starred in the successful film, _Death Becomes Her (1992)_ (qv) with 'Meryl Streep' (qv) and 'Bruce Willis' (qv), which was followed by another successful film _HouseSitter (1992)_ (qv) which co-starred 'Steve Martin (I)' (qv). In 1996 she played the role of an aging alcoholic actress in the comedy _The First Wives Club (1996)_ (qv) with 'Diane Keaton' (qv) and 'Bette Midler' (qv), it became a critical and financial success. She also starred in the 'Woody Allen' film _Everyone Says I Love You (1996)_ (qv) and _The Out-of-Towners (1999)_ (qv) which reunited her with 'Steve Martin (I)' (qv). In 2001 and 2002 she starred in _Town & Country (2001)_ (qv) with 'Warren Beatty' (qv) and _The Banger Sisters (2002)_ (qv) with 'Susan Sarandon' (qv). Goldie has been married twice. First to actor/director 'Gus Trikonis' (qv), from 1969 to 1974. In 1975 she married the musician 'Bill Hudson (I)' (qv) and became a mother for the first time in 1976, when she gave birth to their son 'Oliver Hudson (I)' (qv). In 1979, she had her second child by Hudson, daughter 'Kate Hudson (I)' (qv). The marriage ended in divorce in 1980. Since 1983, she has been in a relationship with actor 'Kurt Russell (I)' (qv) and they have a son together, 'Wyatt Russell' (qv) (born 1986). Goldie is also a grandmother, her daughter Kate has a son named Ryder born January 7, 2004, and her son Oliver has a son named Wilder born August 23, 2007.

  • Men are much simpler mechanisms than women. Nothing changes them . . . even when they have a midlife crisis, they do it in a mindless way . . . that's why I think we should let men go off and have affairs and drive fast cars and dream of being virile--and we should run the world.
  • We can't hold on to our youth, but what you can hang on to is all the things we've been told a zillion times: you have to find the light in your life that you had when you were a little girl or little guy that made you happy.
